From Vision to Victory Featuring "Thriver!"

This Los Angeles art project on health equity illustrates how academics and communities worked together using a participatory approach to identify a key unspoken issue—depression and having quality services in under-resourced communities—and developed a joint solution coalition across health care, social, and community sectors to develop community-wide solutions. Community Partners in Care, a partnership in a large randomized demonstration, showed that this approach, relative to technical assistance, improved mental wellness and quality of life, reduced homelessness risk factors and behavioral health hospitalizations while increasing services in faith-based and community centers. This project also implemented three key stages: The Vision (or developing the idea), the Valley (or doing the work), and leading to Victory (or findings/community impact). The partnership then worked to develop a brief film outlining the partnership, what was addressed, and the findings/solutions to give back to the community. Community Partners in Care received the 2014 Team Science Award of the Association of Clinical and Translational Science.

To celebrate the victory, team leaders Dr. Loretta Jones (lyrics) and Dr. Kenneth B. Wells (music) developed a choral song, "Thriver!" which was presented at a 2016 conference giving back the findings to the Los Angeles community. "From Vision to Victory" was selected by National Academy of Medicine (NAM)'s Visualize Health Equity Project.
